A Ruby’s Story: Bill’s Story of Reconnection

When 15-year-old Bill* arrived at Ruby’s, he was spending time away from home as he navigated conflict with his family, unsure of how to reconnect. Like many young people we support, he was in a challenging situation - but he also had hopes for change.

At Ruby’s, Bill found a safe, supportive environment where he could pause, reflect, and begin to rebuild. With support tailored to his needs, and the backing of a team that brought out his strengths, he began to feel more confident about the future. Family counselling opened the door to healing, and Bill was ready to take the next step. When asked what he wished for, Bill didn’t hesitate: he wanted to cook his favourite meal, burritos, with his family.

He invited his mum and dad to Ruby’s for a special dinner - one he would cook himself. Leading the way in the kitchen, Bill showed them how to prepare his favourite meal. Side by side, they chopped, stirred, wrapped, and reconnected.

Inspired by the experience, they tried it again, this time at home. When the Ruby’s team checked in a few weeks later, Bill’s mum shared they’d made burritos again, and things were feeling more positive at home.

This is the heart of Ruby’s: empowering young people to build life skills, strengthen family connections, and take meaningful steps forward. With the right support, even small moments, like a shared meal, can spark lasting change.
