Trina faced a challenging start in life, marked by homelessness, severe poverty, family and domestic violence (FDV), and abuse. These hardships significantly impacted her mental health and well-being, leading to disengagement from education, training, and employment. Trina struggled with suicidal ideation, self-harming behaviours, and engaged in risk-taking and anti-social activities.
Trina was referred to Parkerville’s MOMO service, an outreach program designed to help young people aged 15 to 21 years who are at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness, or who are residing in crisis or temporary accommodation. Upon recognising the depth of Trina’s situation, her Case Manager, Josh, implemented a multi-faceted support plan aimed at addressing both immediate and long-term needs. Josh liaised with Centrelink to secure financial support for Trina, assisting in obtaining the necessary identification to qualify for Centrelink payments. A Centrelink Social Worker was also engaged to assist Trina with financial debt and ongoing financial management.
Additionally, Josh facilitated psycho-social education sessions focusing on housing pathways, alternative education options, maintaining income, assertiveness, setting boundaries, and improving self-esteem. With Josh's support, Trina began to see significant improvements. Trina engaged with a specialist psychologist, which led to a marked improvement in her mental health and overall presentation. Both Trina and those around her noticed these positive changes. Trina successfully attended our program Education, Employment and Training program (EET), which provided a pathway to both study and paid employment. This achievement was a crucial step towards long-term stability and independence.
While Trina was eligible for housing services, she opted for accommodation with family due to a preference for stability and longer duration of stay. This decision underscored Trina’s growing ability to make strategic choices for her well-being. Trina’s journey illustrates the profound impact of comprehensive, compassionate support. Through the concerted efforts of Josh and various specialist services, Trina transitioned from a state of crisis to one of stability and hope. This case exemplifies the potential for recovery and growth when individuals receive tailored support addressing both her immediate and future needs.
