Six-year-old Jeremy entered foster care in November when his mother, Candice, could no longer care for him. He had previously lived with his granddad, Graham, however he had to move out due to his granddad’s poor health. Despite his resilience, Jeremy often told his foster carer how much he missed his mum and granddad.
Moved by this, his carer contacted Charlie, a Family Link Worker at Parkerville Children and Youth Care. Charlie quickly connected with Graham and Candice, both of whom were also struggling with the separation. Understanding the deep emotional need on both sides, Charlie supported Candince in preparing for a reunion with her son.
During the holidays, the long-awaited catch-up finally took place. Jeremy, his mum, and granddad shared lunch and played together at the beach, creating treasured memories.
Since then, Jeremy’s family visits have continued, and the impact is evident. He is now happier and more engaged, both at school and home.
Charlie highlights how these connections help empower parents like Candice, building trust and reducing feelings of judgement. This, in turn, improves outcomes for children like Jeremy, whose well-being thrives with family support.
