Young women who are experiencing homelessness, at imminent risk of homelessness or who need help to live independently, can find safety and help at the Young Women’s Program.

Young Women's Program (YWP) is a semi-independent accommodation service with four units located in Armadale, offering support and education to mothers and single women aged 15 to 25 years who may be experiencing one or more of the following concerns:

  • Homelessness, or be at risk of homelessness
  • Domestic violence
  • Family breakdown
  • Sexual, physical or emotional abuse
  • Poverty
  • Lack of opportunity in regards to employment, education and general life improvement options
  • Pregnancy
  • Currently are, or have been, under the care of the Department of Communities, Child Protection and Family Support.

The Young Women’s Program accepts two types of referrals:

Variety - for young women who currently or have previously been involved with the Department of Communities.

Penny Jones House - for young women with or without children who require more support from staff and assistance learning independent living skills. Current or prior Departmental involvement is not a requirement.

During their stay, young women are supported to develop a support plan to assist with goal setting and addressing any issues that might impact on functioning as an individual and/or mother. The primary goal is to work with the young women until they can return home or, where appropriate, move to more stable long-term accommodation.

This program offers support and education to mothers and single women to develop their parenting skills, and to further develop independent living skills including budgeting, cooking, cleaning and contributing to a shared household. The Young Women’s Program accepts self-referral, referrals from family and/or professionals involved with the young women.

Unfortunately, the service is unable to accommodate young women with chronic substance abuse and/ or acute mental health issues. All clients need to have basic skills to live on their own.
